In honor of my uncle and cousin who both suffered from Polycystic Kidney Disease I am raising money to donate in their names to the PKD Foundation of Illinois.
PKD runs on my father's side of my family and I never actually understood what the disease really was. My mom and I were both tested to see if either of us was a match for my cousin. Neither of us were. The hospital had done a "pay it forward" chain for kidney transplants. My mom and cousin were both put on the list to find cross matches and about 4 months later they recieved a call that my cousin would be getting a kidney and my mom was a match for a young man who needed a kidney.
I had gotten tested for my uncle and was expecting to do a pay it forward chain just like my mom had done. I ended up being an exact match for him. His kidneys were much worse then my cousins. My uncle had both kidneys removed in July 2012, they weighed 16 pounds each, and in September 2012 we did the transplant.
After my surgery I felt so honored to have been able to do that for my uncle and want as many people to know why it's important to be a donor.
Today, both my uncle and cousin are doing amazing. Both healthy and living life normal.
All proceeds will be donated to the PKD Foundation of Illinois in my cousin and uncle's name.
