Pigs’ Heaven – farmed animals sanctuary in TAIWAN

Taiwan is an island off the coast of China.

Pigs' Heaven is a place of safety for a few lucky farmed animals. To our knowledge it is the only privately owned safe havens in Taiwan for these farmed animal friends of ours. Currently there are 103 pigs, 30 ducks, 2 geese, 100 chickens, 2 cows, and 70 goats living in the farm.

Problem 1.

The government must approve of the land being used for so many animals. The application for approval was submitted to the government during March 2019.

Problem 2.

Because of the recent swine flu epidemic in China, the government now insists on pig farmers buying very expensive food or buying very expensive equipment to ensure the natural food is processed safely for consumption.

The magic moment which changed the future for so many.

Pigs Heaven is run by Mr. Lo, who is a third-generation pig farmer. Like his grandfather, and father, he raised pigs for 10 years for public meat consumption. He did what he had been taught and never thought any different.

On April 23rd, 2008, because of one pig, Mr. Lo suddenly understood the cruelty and suffering he created. It was a regular job, he was loading the pigs into a truck to take them to the slaughterhouse. All the pigs were screaming loudly, all except one. This pig calmly walked into the truck. It made no sound and didn’t need to be pushed. On it’s way up the ramp, the pig locked eyes with Mr. Lo. It was as if the pig had said “Where are you taking me? You’ve raised me for one year.. How can these feelings be gone just like this?”.

That night, he couldn’t sleep. Finally he drove all the way to the slaughterhouse, and planned to pay double the money he had paid the previous day, to buy the pigs back. Unfortunately he was too late. The pigs were already gone.

Mr. Lo’s heart was broken. After that day he never took pigs to the slaughterhouse again. He stopped breeding and killing the pigs for meat. He adopted a vegan lifestyle and encouraged his whole family to eat a plant-based diet with him.

Pigs Heaven’s residents

At the moment there are 103 pigs, 30 ducks, 2 goose, 100 chickens, 2 cows, 70 goats and countless fish, frogs in the lake Mr. Lo has made for the animals. The animals are very friendly, and get belly rubs and plenty of food every day!

Why they need Your help

Government fines
NTD$ 30000 for not having a special permit to raise more than 20 pigs.

Equipment

NTD$700,000 (22,678 USD) New or 250,000NTD$ to 300,000NTD$(8000-9700 USD) for Second hand special equipment to ensure food is processed and safe.
Second-hand equipment price might vary depending on the seller and if it is available at all.

FOOD
Approximately NTD$ 80,000 (2590 USD) per month for dry food

They are hoping to get the second-hand equipment, which price can vary from 250,000NTD$ to 300,000NTD$(8000-9700 USD$), depending on the seller. If there is no second-hand equipment available, they are forced to purchase brand new equipment, which is around 700,000NTD$ (22,678 USD$).
