Photograpy to Fight Thirst in Brazil

This project is about using the power of photography to help families in the countryside of Brazil who are struggling with drought and thirst.

My name is Robison Portioli. I’m a Brazilian photographer and adventurer and I want to draw attention to the thousands of families that are struggling with no water in this huge area called 'semiarido', which is one of the driest places in the world.

Can you ever imagine yourself being thirsty and having only salty or brackish water to drink? Or drinking a coffee made of salty water?

I know it sounds like an extreme situation, like being castaway, but in fact, that’s something thousands of families must deal with in everyday life.

The water from most of the wells of this region and even from the lakes are salty. That happens because the soil is mostly made of crystalline rocks and has a large amount of salt in them.

A Brazilian university has developed the solution for this situation. It's a solar desalinator that uses only solar light to remove the salt and also kill all the dangerous microorganisms in the water. Each solar desalinator can provide enough freshwater for drinking and cooking for an entire family.

Great! People are struggling with salty water and we do have the solution, so now how do we do that?

The thing is there are problems everywhere in the world, even inside Brazil and it's not that easy to raise awareness about one specific theme, to put people together and make that happen

My plan is to visit these families and to use the power of Photography to help. Reaching as many people as possible, showing what no one wants to see. I believe strong images will raise awareness among NGOs, Government, and normal people, motivating everyone to help.

I am in a hurry to show how urgent this situation is, living with drought or being surrounded by salty water is a hard reality that many families are facing right now.

This crowdfunding money will be used to travel to the countryside of Brazil and visit some of these families.

I’m asking for money abroad because Brazilian currency is now very weak in relation to British Pounds, so every single pound you donate is worth more.
