Philomena Farms seeks to help and support Service Members, First Responders, and Veterans by providing an environment and location that provides access to all their mental and physical recovery needs.

As veterans, Nic and Valerie O'Hara are well aware of the challenges faced by many members both during and after their service, whether that be with the military or any first responding services (police, firemen and paramedics). These include, but are not limited to, physical health challenges and mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, addictions, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Many Veterans, First Responders, and Service Members have severe difficulty integrating into their communities or appearing in public places. This accentuates their mental health struggles and can cause added stress for themselves and their families. Although mental health concerns are becoming less stigmatized and accepted within our society, the suicide rate among veterans has remained high, showing consistently worrying numbers. Multiple studies conducted over the past 10 years demonstrate that the suicide rate among Veterans is significantly higher than that of the Canadian general public despite attempts at providing more support for these members.

Philomena Farms wants to provide an all-encompassing recovery location for Veterans, Service Members, and First Responders. The farm would provide work spaces for a variety of professionals such as counsellors, a psychologist, a massage-therapist, a physio-therapist, and an administrator with significant experience working with veterans and the Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) system help personnel navigate the recovery administrative process.

The new facilities would include an indoor riding arena, a lounge/classroom space, and office spaces. The main focus of the indoor arena and classroom would be to provide Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) programs as well as Equine Assisted Psycho-therapy (EAP) when partnered with a licenced health care professional such as a psychologist. The office spaces would be provided to the professionals to use in order to have appropriate facilities to meet with clients.

Although the Farm is already a safe refuge for a fairly consistent group of Veterans, the goal is to grow to continue to serve and support this underserved community. In order to be able to grow and provide this support system in the near future, rather than many years down the road, we need help from you. We are aiming to raise a lofty goal of $1,000,000.00. Although this may seem like a significant amount, every dollar towards this goal helps those within our community who have given their mental health and physical health in order to serve their country and communities. We and they thank you.
