Phangan Animal Care For Strays Foundation is a non-profit organisation operating on the island of Koh Phangan in Thailand. We are an animal hospital that provides life-saving medical treatment, vaccinations, and sterilisations to stray and wild animals of Koh Phangan.

WE RECEIVE NO GOVERNMENT FUNDING AND RELY ENTIRELY ON DONATIONS AND VOLUNTEERS TO PROVIDE THESE VITAL SERVICES TO THE ANIMALS OF THE ISLAND. SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE PANDEMIC, PACS HAS REALLY BEEN STRUGGLING TO ACQUIRE THE NECESSARY DONATIONS WE NEED TO SUSTAIN OUR OPERATIONS. WITH THE MASS EXODUS OF TOURISM FROM THE COUNTRY MANY OF OUR MONTHLY DONATIONS HAVE LEFT AS WELL.

PACS WAS FOUNDED IN 2001. BACK THEN, THERE WERE NO VETERINARY SERVICES AVAILABLE ON THE ISLAND AT ALL, AND PET OWNERS HAD TO GO TO A NEIGHBOURING ISLAND, KOH SAMUI, IN ORDER TO GET TREATMENT FOR THEIR ANIMALS. THIS MEANT THAT CARING FOR THE HEALTH OF PETS WAS VERY EXPENSIVE FOR LOCALS. ALSO, AT THAT TIME, THE PRIMARY METHOD OF STRAY POPULATION CONTROL WAS GOVERNMENT-SANCTIONED CULLING, WHICH MEANT THAT THERE WAS A HUGE POPULATION OF STRAY DOGS AND CATS ON THE ISLAND.

For these reasons, in the past, our clinic treated both owned and stray animals in return for a donation. Now that there are several clinics for owned animals, we can focus our efforts purely on animals with no owner. It is our mission to reduce the suffering of stray and wild animals on Koh Phangan.

What We Do

Sterilisation

PACS performs humane population control year-round via stray cat and dog sterilisations. As a result, we have observed a noticeable decrease in the number of street, beach and temple dogs over the years. However, Koh Phangan still has many kittens and puppies being born with no food, no shelter, no home and no love.
We would like to increase our ongoing sterilisations by hiring a full-time Thai veterinarian. This would enable us to double our monthly sterilisation rate from an average of 30 per month up to 60 per month, doubling our impact and significantly reducing the number of animals born to a life of hardship.

To do this, we need to know that we will have the regular income that will pay a modest veterinarian's salary and also cover the extra medication costs.

Rabies Vaccination & Disease Control

Each animal that is admitted to the PACS hospital for medical care will receive a rabies vaccination before being discharged, as well as vaccinations against the killer viruses Distemper and Parvo. We also arrange regular vaccination camps around the island to ensure maximum coverage, paying particular attention to the temples as a large concentration of animals live here.

We give an average of 50 rabies vaccines per month and Koh Phangan has not had a case of Rabies since PACS was established - we sincerely hope to keep it this way.

Nursing & Emergency Care

Unfortunately, traffic accidents and intentional poisoning are common causes of emergency situations for the strays of Koh Phangan. PACS nurses are trained to stabilise victims of trauma, reverse poisoning and treat all manner of broken bones. We also provide treatments for victims of disease, such as tick fever, and skin conditions, such as demodectic mange, wound care and various necessary surgeries.

We provide post-operative care for all clinic patients, and we oversee the recovery and rehabilitation of all animals until they are fully-healed and ready to return home.

Education

PACS seeks to educate the local community about responsible pet ownership and what to do when you encounter stray or injured animals in the wild. When we have the available resources, we send our volunteers out to share knowledge with the locals and tourists of Koh Phangan.
