What would you do if you intended to go to school but knew you were out of pads and had no money to buy a new pack? Would you skip school? Or still go to class but have old newspapers, dry tree bark or kitchen cloths stuffed in your panties to absorb the flow?
Around the world, 14 million girls under the age of 18 marry each year. This implies that over 1.2 million girls a month, over 200,000 girls a week, approximately 38,000 girls a day, 27 every minute or , around one girl every two seconds.
In societies that girls are looked at as home makers and child bearers, this is even worse. At the onset of menstruation, girls in Africa are often seen as mature and ready to 'breed' as such they are a fertile ground for men who have such a huge appetite for virgin girls.
Without proper means of concealing the menstrual blood and maintaining proper menstrual hygiene, these girls are at a higher risk of being the numbers in the statistics above.
Ten percent of girls and women aged between 14 and 21 surveyed in 2017 by children's charity Plan International UK said they had experienced being unable to afford sanitary products. Four in ten said they had used pieces of paper from their exercise, books because they had struggled to afford sanitary wear.
In Kenya, girls are forced to sit on the sand for the entire duration of their periods, use feathers, maize husks or dried cowdung to control the flow. These are always not hygienic and may expose them to other infections and also watering down their dignity. in addition, they may be lured into unsafe sex by people who are ready to provide them with sanitary pads.
You and I wouldn't want them to be the statistics. We would be proud and feel accomplished when they grow into women who will change their societies for the better. This is the basis of this fundraiser. Since 2015 Periods Of Dignity Initiative has been supplying sanitary pads to over 100 girls from the four slums of Homa Bay County. Menstruation being a recurring phenomenon, we have thought it wise to set up an ongoing fundraising campaign. Donate $10 today to enable Periods Of Dignity Initiative provide 10 girls with sanitary pads or $20 for 20 girls for the whole month! This will assist them in managing their periods discretely hence giving them dignity during their menses and ensuring that they do not miss school because of this natural occurrence.
