Okanagan growers are blessed to live in a region with a booming restaurant and tourism industry, and a community filled with health conscious people. The support we've received from CSA customers like you, and from the local restaurant and winery owners has allowed our farm to grow and prosper. It's also afforded us the opportunity to help make our local food about more than fine dining and attracting tourists.
We want to be part of an Eat Local movement that creates access to fresh, healthy food for members of our community who can't afford to enjoy farm to table food regularly. In our culture, it's a sad reality that those with the lowest incomes typically consume the lowest quality processed foods, which means those faced with the greatest challenges are the least nourished.
This is why we're donating a CSA share to the Kelowna Women's Shelter. KWS is a non-profit organization that offers shelter and support to women and children in the Okanagan who are transitioning from abusive situations. They provide councelling and safe temporary homes and meals for those in need, to encourage emotional and physical health.
We strongly believe healthy food can is a valuable asset in the journey to recovery, so from June 21st to September 6th, KWS will receive a total of 12 Full Share boxes full of fresh produce from our farm to share with their clients. That's a value of $270.
With your help, we can provide KWS with even more produce, more often.
Here's how it works:
If we raise $100 by June 1st, their box will be upgraded to a our largest box size, the Family Sized Share. This means they will receive more items per box.
If we reach $250 (raising an additional $150) by September 6th, their program will extend to October 25th, which means they will receive a total of 7 more boxes.
If we raise another $250, we will match the remaining $250 needed to donate a Full Share CSA to KWS next year (May 16- October 24 2014).
What happens to the funds if we don't meet our goal?
Any funds we receive that are shy of our final goals will be matched, and then applied towards single boxes. The cost of one family sized CSA box is $29.00, so if we only receive $15 by September 6th, while not enough to fund 7 additional boxes, we will match the remaining $14 so KWS will receive 1 additional box.
