PawFriends Animal Rescue Org. - NPO 138-085 is a group of lady volunteers who go into the townships of South Africa to save the animals from starvation, diseases, deadly parasites, abuse, brutality, dog fighting, dog baiting, over-breeding, and neglect. For 8 years we have braved the crime in the areas and the harsh African weather to save the lives of these most precious beings.
We have rescued some extreme cases of dog baiting, the practice of tying up a dog and letting a fighting dog rip it apart to built confidence. We have gotten treatment for many dogs and cats that have had boiling oil thrown on them, have been stabbed, have been raped by their owners, have been bred to the extent that the female’s uterus prolapses. It is not uncommon to see a female dog be bred over and over again until she dies, so the owner can sell the pups on street corners for some extra cash. We provide emergency vet care to those who need it.
We work with the SPCA (as their support in the townships is limited) and purchase vaccinations to prevent the horrible deaths from Parvo and Distemper. We work with Dancers Love Dogs to spay and neuter as many as we can. We test cats and kittens for Feline AIDS and Leukemia. We have their cancer treated at the vet. We have held several mass-sterilization days in the townships and we perform a spay/neuter on every dog or cat that we rescue to save them from diseases and protect them from over-breeding. Once the dog or cat is healthy, we find good homes for them, doing home checks to ensure a happy life for "our" rescue.
The townships in South Africa were originally created in the late 19th century, but peaked in popularity in the apartheid era when “non-white” people were forced to leave their homes and move to these places, designated for certain racial groups (Black, Colored (mixed-race)” and Indian). These neighborhoods are made up from shacks that are built from corrugated metal, collapsing containers, and any scraps that could be found. These shacks lack basic facilities like running water or electricity, and the crime is unbelievable. Families of 10+ are likely to live in these tiny homes… So you can only imagine what life is like for an animal in these settlements. Food, affection and love is hard to come by for these animals. PawFriends teaches the community the value of having a well cared for and loved pet. We do talks in the schools to teach the children how to take care of and cherish their pet.
We have had great success so far in providing refuge for these abused and mistreated animals… but we can only help as many as our donations allow us to afford. This is where you can join us as an animal rescuer. With your donations, save even more animals from terrible fates. Thank you from our hearts.
We are seeking donations for funding in the following areas:
- Spay / Neuter
- Deworming and dipping of the animals. THe ticks are literally crawlig up walls. THeir ears are completely filled with fat ticks.
- Vaccinations including rabies
- Our vet bills
We also hope to raise enough money to have a mobile spay clinic so we can go into the townships and spay the animals.
The average cost of 1 animal intake:
- Spay / Neuter: $30
- Deworming: $5
- Food for 1 month: $30
So for the low amount of $65, you can drastically improve the life of an animal and ensure they are on the path to a healthy, and happy life. This includes the intake, rehabilitation, and support for 1 month.
Any donations from you will go a long way and are greatly appreciated. All volunteers do NOT take a salary so all proceeds go to the animals in need. If you would like to make a donation, please refer below.
We thank you and God bless!
