My name is Jad and I am an animal lover and a supporter of PAW (Perpetual Animal Watch) in Beirut, Lebanon and these are some of our stories:
Meet Simba: a cat in Saida in the south that disappeared for a week, and came back with a severe leg injury resulting from a car accident. One of our rescuers rushed him to the vet where X-Ray results showed a fractured knee, a broken hip, and a broken hind leg. His other hind leg was also grazed. It is now 2 weeks since the operation. He has had multiple check-ups, and now will have to be taken back to the same vet as soon as possible for amputation as his nerves did not survive the accident. Simba is a gentle cat and and would make a lovely companion. He is playful despite his pain and we hope that he will soon find a loving family to look after him.
Meet Sweetheart: a dog that was hit by a car and sits in Dbayeh- moaning with pain and can't move. One of our team members spotted her and shared with the team. An experienced rescuer was sent to the spot and within 4 hours Sweetheart was taken to a vet to look into her injuries and relieve her pain. Sweetheart, like her name is doing well and follow us around. She is waiting for a forever home.
Meet Miracle, a survivor horse who was abandoned, treated badly and left under the sun next to her friend’s rotting body. We call her Miracle, because she survived drought, lack of food and inhumane treatment and it was a miracle she survived the state we found her in. Miracle is beautiful, smart and gentle, and regaining strength by the day, putting on some weight and we hope to find her an adopter someday. Her abusers were reported to the authorities.
The above are three of many cases that our 35 volunteers respond to on a daily basis. Our rescues are sometimes individual cases but at others are larger and much more dangerous such as the Beirut Port Rescue you see in the video. PAW and Animal Aid work hand in hand on these missions to rescue abandoned and abused animals all around Lebanon, take them in, look after them, treat them and then help find them a forever home.
Currently most of our work has been either self-funded, or supported by some friends, and animal lovers in Lebanon. This however is no longer sustainable due to economic and financial difficulties the country is facing.
The recent crisis in Lebanon which led to the devaluation of the currency 6 fold, coupled with COVID has meant that a lot of people let go of their pets: cats, dogs and sometimes horses as they can no longer afford them. These animals were not only abandoned by people they loved and cared for but were left on the streets to fend for themselves. The current number of abandoned animals in Lebanon is around 30,000 animals, a number expected to increase due to the economic crisis. Beirut's August 4 Blast made matters worse as more than 300,000 families lost their homes and several had to let go of their pets as they didn't have a place to keep them or the means to take care of them.
