Parvo kills more than 90% of untreated dogs. Saving puppies desperately sick with parvo is expensive and time-consuming. A litter of four very young puppies was thrown out on the street to die. The neighbor who found the puppies in her carport called Salvadores de Animales for emergency assistance. The puppies were immediately taken to the vet and diagnosed with parvovirus. All four were infected.

Costs spiraled quickly. Sweetpea returned to the hospital within days and died. Darling began to fail, but was kept alive with 24/7 IV support. In order to closely monitor their status, we had to buy an extra X-pen to isolate them. The surviving three pups needed extensive vitamin/nutritional support, probiotics, and antibiotics, all given by injection because they were too sick to eat. Each daily injection therapy was $25 for each pup, extending over 2 weeks. Two pups were hospitalized with emergency IV support for a cost of $140. Daily office visit charges for 2 weeks raised costs substantially. The foster caregiver had to give subcutaneous fluids to Honey and Darling for 3 days each. As they began to recover, the pups required Hill's a/d Urgent Care canned food for 4 days before they could switch to cooked chicken breasts and rice. Because the pups were malnourished during their first month of life, they had major fungal infections that required additional treatment.

This emergency drained our organization's funds to crisis levels. All donations will be used to replenish our emergency vet care funds and allow us to continue to accept sick or injured animals. Without your valued support we will be unable to continue our mission and puppies like these will be left on the street. We have no other source of income besides donations, so your contribution directly affects the lives of suffering animals that humans have cast aside.

Puppies were malnourished and sick

Update posted by Salvadores de Animales Inc at 05:47 pm

The pups were thrown out on the street at the age of 4 weeks. They were not only sick with parvo, they were malnourished. Skin fungus appears in dogs that have compromised immune systems due to malnutrition or stress. This was another complication.
