Participant in the International Student Festival in Trondheim

Update posted by Phelo Mkwebelana On Nov 26, 2018

My name is Phelo Mkwebelana, I am 20 years old. I was born and raise in a small township called Langa, Cape Town. I am the last born in my family, I live with my mother and two older sisters. I describe myself as a very loving, kind, selfless, optimistic, goal-orientated and God-fearing young gentleman. I am truly blessed to have been raised by loving and supportive parents, they thought me to always be kind, loving, independent, respectful, responsible and to always have integrity.

Coming from a household that has very little income was extremely tough us, due to lack of education and employment of my parents. I was fortunate to receive a full scholarship at Christel House South Africa, an independent non-profit school that recruits deserving students that come from disadvantaged backgrounds and gives students an opportunity of quality education and basic educational needs. Later, I got accepted at the University of the Western Cape. I am currently in my 2nd year majoring in my dream career Industrial Psychology.

I have been fortunate to be selected to represent South Africa at the International Student Festival in Trondheim (IsFit), this festival is the largest international student festival in the world. It invites participants from all corners of the world. IsFit aims to be a meeting place for discussion and dialogue regarding current global issues, and an arena where ideas are born, friendships are made, and valuable lessons are learned. Next year the theme will be “Migration: The Global Puzzle!”. It would be a great opportunity to meet the world and learn from other cultures and nations.

Going on this trip would be lifetime opportunity for me, I have never travelled out of South Africa and this would be my first time. My family is so proud of me for being selected to attend this event. They are unfortunately unable to fund me because they do not have much to offer due to unemployment. It is sad that IsFit is unable cover international flights to Norway. One is to find their own way to the event from their own country. I would love to go to this amazing event and be able to bring back great experiences from the event and represent South Africa. Any kind of financial assistance towards traveling would be truly appreciated. May God Bless You!
