Parkinson’s help dog for Matthew

Update posted by Matthew George Mitchell On Aug 07, 2016

It's been a long while since my last update. I be been in at out of hospital with cancer tests then operations, then, through my own stupidity, bleeding out two litres of blood and redoing of said surgery, but finally Jeffrey is here and he is adorable.

I had some help choosing with the main focus being on a puppy that is relaxed, confident, calm and pragmatic and, apart from dinner time, he is all of those things and more.

He is nine weeks old and already knows his name, sits and comes when called but stairs are a challenge and he slides down them at this point.

Thank you all again for being a part of the project, helping me make this experiment a reality and hopefully helping others like me achieve the same through the experience I am gaining.

Matt

Time for a long overdue update. It's been a rocky few weeks but during that time the two golden retriever mums have both been successfully rendered with child (puppy) and ultrasound exams are due this week.

All going well, puppies will be springing forth in joyful abundance within the next three months. April the first was world Parkinson's day and was a great chance to meet others with Parkinson's and talk about strategies for day to day living. I also met an American patient with a service dog a few weeks ago and it was an awesome experience. Can't wait to get started :)

Thank you all once again for being a part of this fund raising effort.

Peace and love

Matthew

Hi everyone. Update time. I've been a bit quiet because I was in Budapest recording a new album. It should be ready for distribution in April but I'd like now to say that I want to send all of you who were so lovely as to donate to my puppy project a CD to listen to and hopefully enjoy or to make a rather nice coaster with:)

On the fundraising side, my awesome friend Odette, Yoda teacher extraordinary, is having a Doga fundraising session in the park, in Carterton, in New Zealand so if anyone is in the area head down there for some yoga, and canine, chaos.

My mum and her colleagues at Exeter hospital in the UK are also having a fundraiser with a cake week. Ironically this will be taking place in the diabetes research department. I'd imagine they'll be doing all sorts of healthy cake :))) or not.

My training research is coming along nicely and I have already sorted out the first six months of training and the little feller isn't even born yet. I also want to call him Jeffrey, but my son thinks that's a silly name for a dog, especially a golden retriever, so suggestions will be welcome.

Thank you all and back soon

Peace and love,

Matthew

The eagle has landed and my first goal reached. Thank you all so much. It is truly humbling and overwhelming. In two weeks I will be meeting the puppy's parents.

The money raised so far with cover the costs of the puppy, pedigree paperspapers, neutering, pet passport and the initial puppy training. Any surplus from now on is to be put aside for the first examination and service trading courses.

I'll be adding updates in the next day or so.

Thank and peace and love

Hi everyone!

Already over three quarters of the way to my goal and making stage one of this project a reality, and I'm pretty overwhelmed. Thank you all of you for donating, sharing and supporting.

This is a shorter update today but I wanted to share what I've been learning. Training service dogs is a long process and stage one will take twelve to fourteen months. During that time I will be visiting a training centre in Budapest that specializes in guide dogs, and a training center in Britain. It's interesting to note that although there are established international standards, ech country has its own laws regarding service dogs and they are vague at best. This of course led to a lot of abuse of the system with, obviously in America, people claiming to need their service snakes and guide chickens with them at all times. :)

I also found a couple of videos that illustrate one of the ways that young onset Parkinson's has changed my life. The first a small concert from 2011 where I can stand, play and sing all at the same time and from a few months ago where I have to sit. Fortunately the playing hides the involuntary movements most of the time :)

So once again thank, and peace and love to you all too

Hello everyone. Thanks so much for the support so far. It seems pretty inadequate just to say thanks but it really is truly overwhelming. In two days enough has already been raised for the puppy and the breeder told me yesterday that the two parent pairs will be treated to a night of romance in about three Weeks. The parents themselves are golden retreivers that have cone from a long line of calm and friendly dogs many of which are already in service as guide dogs and therapy dogs. Its pretty exciting and humbling at the same time to see this project develop. In Hungary there are no service dogs availbale to young onset Parkinson's sufferers so I this works. The next stage is the vet bills and initial training and assessment costs whih will be about 1000 euros.

Thanks again and i'll be back with more updates in the coming weeks.

Lots of love

Matthew
