Today I would like to inform you about Naas Schutte. He is my loving father of 75 year old. He is married to my mother and he has been the sole breadwinner for the last 45 years. He was in a road accident in December 2017 were his hip was severely damaged and he required a hip replacement to continue with his daily activities. Due to financial constraints he and my mother could not afford a medical aid at that point in time. After the accident he could not afford private care and went to the provincial hospital for treatment, who informed him that he will have to wait for between 1 and 2 years before they could assist him. In this time he was unable to work and earn an income, he and my mother had to use all of their savings to pay the bills and all his medication. This situation continued until January 2019 when we were able to raise enough money for the hip replacement. On the 4th of February 2019 he received the hip replacement but due to the lack of treatment before the replacement , after the replacement he had to learn how to walk again and had to receive therapy. He was very excited to start working again and earning an income to provide for them. Unfortunately 4 months later in August 2019, he collapsed and his health started to deteriorate, and no doctor could pinpoint what was causing the problem. In September 2019 it was revealed that his lower back had problems and that the spine cord was fragmented. We tried our best to get him medical attention at the Provincial hospital with no avail, as he was declined for assistance due to his old age. On the 10th of October 2019 I arrived at home and he was unconscious, and barely breathing. He was dehydrated and had a very high fever. We phoned the ambulance and they helped us to get him admitted in to the Provincial hospital. The doctors told us that due to his fragile state they will not be able to operate on his back. They informed us that they need to get his vitals up before they can perform the operation but after 6 weeks they told us there was nothing they could do for him so they discharged him from hospital. My sister took him in so that she can look after both him and my mother. Although the financial strain of the expensive medication is great on them, she is still taking care of them both 24/7. He was admitted back into hospital twice thereafter, with all the love and care from my sister he is able to eat some soft foods like soup and mash and is doing a little better. Unfortunately they have no means of income and the house that they own has become dilapidated. We want to assist them, by trying to rent out their house but due to the state, repairs and maintenance needs to be done but there is no money available. The roof needs replacing as well as the water pipes. There are also broken windows that need replacement and cupboards. There are many other expenses and repairs that have not been mentioned in this letter. I spoke to my father and he has new hope if we can manage to arrange the funding to help them to fix the house. I would appreciate if you can assist us in our quest to help our parents to get them back on their feet. For them to have some form of hope to look forward in the future. Thank you for reading this letter.
