In May and June 2013, I will be traveling through Wilfrid Laurier’s Global Studies Experience (GSE) program to Panama with Global Volunteer Network (GVN). Laurier’s GSE, a work and study abroad program targeted towards global studies students, “offers students an opportunity to connect academic inquiry with experiential activity by participating in volunteer placements around the globe” (GSE-Global Studies Experience Wilfrid Laurier). As a participant in this program, and a full-time volunteer with Global Volunteer Network, I will be working to support local organizations in Boquete, Panama in community development initiatives. Based on the needs of these organizations and my abilities and interests, I will be matched with one or two of the projects GVN is partnered with in Boquete. These include a centre for adults and children with disabilities, a wildlife centre, a women's jewelry cooperative and a recycling initiaitve.
