Hello, everyone!
My name is Jayson Gunayan and I setup this crowdsourcing campaign in behalf of my ever dearest, resilient, hardworking, and oftentimes corny (dad jokes!) 62-year old father, Edwin Gunayan, who was diagnosed on January 30, 2021 with advanced pancreatic cancer — a notoriously lethal disease.
According to the doctors, the tumor is inoperable/unresectable and we are looking at 3 to 6 months survival time. Unfortunately, pancreatic cancer usually shows little or no symptoms until it has advanced and spread. Therefore, most cases are diagnosed at later, more difficult-to-treat stages. Admittedly, this is very painful and heart-wrenching to hear knowing that a person we love so much will inevitably come to a sticky end sooner than we were expecting.
Despite the fact, my family’s primary goal now (with the guidance of his doctor) is to provide him a comfortable, meaningful, and dignified quality of life through palliative care. This focuses on providing him relief from pain and other symptoms caused by the tumor in his pancreas. To alleviate his suffering from a number of agonizing symptoms i.e. constant abdominal pain, loss of appetite or unintended weight loss, yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes (jaundice), itchy skin, abnormal build up of fluid in the abdomen (ascites), among others, he requires a double bypass surgery (gastroenteric and biliary) which costs a lot of money, not to mention the various lab tests/blood work, drugs and medicines, and a few weeks stay in the hospital.
Aside from the physical aspect, we’re also looking at ways on how we can optimize his emotional, social, and spiritual well-being which are equally as important.
Hence, here I am asking for your support, thoughts, and prayers for my dad to have a decent or better quality of life through the absence of extended suffering, if that makes any sense.
