Outstanding Student Loan Balance

I lost my job about a year ago when the company I worked for fell through. I have been actively trying to find another job since then with no luck. Due to the economic strain in my country, companies either aren't hiring or I'm qualified but lack experience. It's been a tough year and I've updated my loan agency to my recent setbacks, however I received an email recently from them advising me that I have two weeks to pay $3,500 out of an outstanding balance of $6,000. If the amount is not paid, my info will be published in all local and some international publications and they will move forward with acquiring any assests I own.
