Outreach360 Volunteer Teacher: Livelle Mobley

Recently I have been looking for better opportunities to invest my time and my talents into other people. This quest began with me identifying  ways that both my hobbies and my passions could be employed.  This has led to a very reflective few months for me as I have stirred a desire to use my personality and artistry to positively influence the lives of others. I am a firm believer in the pursuance of dreams, no matter how large or small they might be. So, I have decided that I want to not only encourage but equip and empower.  I have learned that In doing this I will not only enrich the lives of others but my own as well.  I have thoughtfully considered how I could move this insatiable desire to action and it led me  to the decision of volunteering my time with the non-profit organization Outreach360 in the Dominican Republic.   Outreach360 has been working in the Dominican Republic since 1994, and in Nicaragua since 2010. Since 1994, over 12,000 short term volunteers have joined Outreach360. Outreach360 volunteers work in disadvantaged neighborhoods. The need for quality education in developing countries is huge. The lack of educational opportunities results in entire neighborhoods of children growing up unprepared for college or qualified for a job. Each Outreach360 volunteer has two significant roles: to donate important volunteer time while in the Dominican Republic, and to help raise funds necessary to help fulfill Outreach360's mission. As a volunteer, I will be working at an educational learning center for disadvantaged children. Volunteers primarily teach English, Spanish literacy, and public health to the children at the center. English is an important skill in Latin America, providing educational and work opportunities. Often, the first question an employer will ask at a job interview is "Do you speak English?"  The ability to read is critical to future success, but many kids don't have access to children's books and haven't learned this basic skill.  Health knowledge is often viewed as common sense, but the need for health education in developing countries is significant.    As a fund-raiser,I am helping to raise program funds for the center:  construction, maintenance, curriculum, equipment and supplies, and more.  I have already paid for my airline ticket, and donated $1,000 of my own money toward my expenses.
