On Saturday, January 7th, we were contacted from the State police barracks, by the finder of a dog suspected to be hit by a car. It was reported that she found him alone, along Pumping Station Road in Juniata County PA. We immediately met the finder and transported the very large puppy, that vets originally believed to be an approximately 7 month old lab mix (due to his size), to Metzger Animal Hospital, in State College PA. Initial xrays showed no signs of fractures, however we knew from the beginning there was something very wrong. It seemed that he had absolutely no feeling in his tail and his back legs were not moving. He would however, react to extreme pressure between his toes on both rear legs. Dr Rider at Metzger Animal Hospital took over Wyatt's case on Monday morning. A CT scan was performed to get to the bottom of why he would not move his back legs. Our worst fears are now a reality. Wyatt has several severe and debilitating spinal injuries. He has fractures at C6, C7 and T1. This is 3 breaks in his lower neck area. He has a compression fracture at T13, which is putting significant pressure on his spinal cords. There are "too many pieces" to be surgically put back together at Mezgers, even with their expertise. To say we are devastated is beyond an understatement. At this point, he will remain hospitalized until we are able to make a plan. We are diligently searching for a surgeon who feels it is worth a shot to give this boy a chance to walk again. He has a major fracture, that cannot be repaired by just any surgeon. This little boy, who has been shuffled around to 3 different homes in his short 4 months of life, deserves the best that we have to offer. It is unsure what truly happened to Wyatt. We have no idea how his injuries occurred. We honestly do not want to give up on him. This cannot be his fate. His test results are being forwarded to the best Neurologists in both our state and surrounding states, in hopes that someone will feel he is a candidate for surgery. We already know what this can do to our rescue... but, we are willing to do it for him. He deserves to live a long and loved life. If we do nothing... if we do not at least try... he will still require surgery to stabilize and a wheelchair because he will be permanently paralyzed. He is a 4 month old great dane/lab mix. His current bill is over $4000. With so many uncertainties ahead of us, we truly need your help
