Hello to anyone reading this, my name is Ryan. I just wanted to say thank you for looking at our page. I’m not one to ask for help, as I was raised to be as self-sufficient as possible but this whole experienced has humbled me to some degree or more accurately, made me realise I can’t do it all on my own. We are always looking for any way to overcome my condition and honestly it has been hard on us. Christine brought up the possibility of a fundraiser for some time but as I’ve said, I shy away from asking for help and in my true stubborn fashion I looked for any other means to raise the funds… but as per usual, she was right (Don’t tell her I said that, as she will never let me hear the end of it). I’m still rather uneasy about the whole thing and so we took to writing the story together.

Hello, my name is Christine. Ryan and I have been together for 11 months now and he needs all the help he could get. Since young, he has been diagnosed with 2 physical illnesses; Crohns and Spondylitis. The problem we are facing now is getting enough medicine for his Crohns so that he can go into remission. As most of our friends might know, Ryan and I met online, but our interactions through our relationship are like every other happy couple aside from the physical aspect. Ryan lives in South Africa while I live in Singapore. For months since we've been dating, we have been working towards meeting each other. As Ryan works as an English teacher, we thought about moving to Vietnam or China where he would have a more stable source of income, but we were always met with the same issue of how we could get a constant supply of his medicine if we do relocate. Out of all his illnesses, his Crohns is something that has to be monitored on a day to day basis. Crohns is a chronic inflammatory disease that happens to your digestive tract. Symptoms include chronic pains, severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss and malnutrition; all which Ryan has experienced. Before we met, Ryan was admitted into the hospital nearly dying from organ failure of the colon, leading him to be hospitalized for half a year. After numerous trials of medication his doctors have given him, only one type of medication seem to help; Humira (https://www.humira.com/). Humira is extremely hard to obtain and expensive to afford. It has to be kept at a certain constant temperature in order for it to be effective. Ryan has to inject Humira into his system every week but correctly we can barely afford to do it every second week, these injections weaken his immune system.

Right now, Ryan barely has enough to afford for half the dosage he needs. In order to reach remission, he needs to afford twice the dosage he is currently taking. He is currently fighting a court case with his medical aid, to cover the medication he requires to live but they are constantly delaying or stretching out the case in hopes that it will be dropped (whether that be due to lack of funds or that he simply gives in to his conditions).Ryan has just recently been able to move into a shared rented apartment. When he still lived with his mother and step-dad, they never really seemed to treat him right. He was shamed for the amount of food he consumed (Due to the damage to the lining of his colon a lot of nutrients is lost in the food he digests, leading him to eat more at the time) and when he got food for himself with his own income, he would get yelled at for wasting money. There are a lot more instances with his family but that’s not the point of this message.

As of now, he teaches online with his TEFL certification. I recently graduated with an animation degree and is still sending out applications for a full-time job. My only source of income for the time being are freelance projects given by friends and my former college lecturers and although they dont pay much, I use the income to help him out when I can. Besides his medication, Ryan has to afford for rent, basic nessecities and his medical aid whilst saving up for our first visit to each other. Leaving our visiting plans aside for now, we are focusing on raising enough money for him to afford his full doses for a few months in order for him to reach remission. He needs 18 000 Rand (approx $1 252 USD) a month to afford for 4 syringe of Humira, which is the full dosage he needs. As no one within his family would help him out, we would both greatly appreciate it if you could take the time to read his story and lend us a helping hand; Even a dollar would mean a lot to us. We would also appreciate it if you could share this with your friends and family. Thank you for your time and kindness.
