Welcome to YCC's Collective Funding Project III

Join us in raising 50,000 HKD to support Oscar Chan's solo exhibition at Things that can happen (Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong) following his residency since February.

"Devils and demons do not exist only in myth. They live in people’s minds. The strongest devil that lives in my mind is fear."

Over the last two years, Oscar has been reconciling with his demons through art practice. During his time at Things that can happen, Oscar pushes himself out of his comfort zone, delving deeper into the relationship between the external world and the darkness within all of us, and the continuous psychological creation of one through the other. From 29 April, Oscar seals himself into the galleries of the space, daily habits fitting into the corners of the rooms, cutting himself off from our mediatised world, and engages with the energies, shadows and voices that the site compels. As an obsessive observer of his internal state, the oppressive confines of Things that can happen may call new demons to surface only to make way for a new experience of himself, the world and the Things that can happen.

The gallery will be open from Thursday to Sunday 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and by appointment.

We are delighted to arrange private appointments with Oscar during his time in the space. In addition, a conversation between Oscar, Jesse McKee, resident and Oscar’s flatmate at Things that can happen, and Chantal Wong, co-founder of Things that can happen will be organised for YCC donors and friends. (Date TBC)

About Oscar Chan Yik Long

Oscar Chan Yik Long (b. 1988, Hong Kong) graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts of Hong Kong Baptist University in 2011. His practice focuses on personal experiences through different media including installation, ceramics, and illustration, most of which are site-specific. The works explore conditions of life, and how individuals associate themselves with others. This is his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong.

About Things that can happen

Things that can happen is a non-profit art space located in the historic district of Sham Shui Po, in Kowloon, at the heart of Hong Kong. 'Things' aims to provide a platform for experimentation and dialogue in response to the changing social, political and cultural context of our city. Through our residency programme, we aim to support the furthering of discussions and aesthetic experiments in Hong Kong while connecting them to conversations and contexts beyond.

About YCC's Collective Funding Programme

From the start YCC has wanted to revisit the notion of arts patronage in and out of Asia. In response, YCC’s ‘Collective Funding’ programme was launched in August 2016 with the aim of using the 'collective power' of its 300+ active members to fund particular projects that open and expand artistic dialogue related to Asia. This project will conclude YCC's year-long fundraising thematic for 2016-17 'Grassroots organisations in Hong Kong', which has successfully funded projects at Holy Motors and Neptune.
