Osaka, Autumn 2015 (Book + EP by Simon Fowler)

I have been invited to take part in a group exhibition taking place in Osaka, Japan in October called NON FICTION 2015. The exhibition is presented by Pulp Gallery, Osaka and will be held in Manpukuji Temple, Osaka.

As of September the 19th, I will spend three weeks in the temple creating two large format artworks on Fusuma (Japanese sliding door/panel) from the 10th until the 12th of October.

I will document the entire experience, from the moment I leave my front door in London until the closing of the exhibition. The book will contain notes and sketches showing the generation of the artwork as well as notes & observations whilst in and around Osaka, where I plan on drawing my inspiration from.

The book will feature interviews with the exhibition curator Naoki Takubo (Pulp Gallery, Osaka) and the other attending artists as well as an overview of the final exhibition.

In addition to the visual aspect of the book, together with my brother from another planet, Shigeru Ishihara (Dj Scotch Egg/DJ Scotch Bonnet, Small But Hard Recordings) we will create an audio accompaniment on CD built from field recordings, interviews etc in order to bring another dimension to the book, think of this book as part tour diary, part exhibition program, part old school punk zine created to record a potentially interesting and unusual experience.

In addition to the book and CD, I will make (to scale) two multi-colour engravings based on the final exhibition artworks as a diptych edition available exclusively to those who pledge accordingly. The zine and EP will be limited to the number of orders plus approximately 30 copies for press, small scale shop distribution. No reprint will be made.

All who contribute will be instrumental in making this journey work out and will be praised accordingly in the thanks list.

Specifications of printing:

40 page duo tone saddle stiched book, housed in 300gsm card, cover will be hand printed from vinyl plates via etching press.

Inner paper stock will be 120gsm Fabriano paper plus various coloured paper stock for section headers and footers.

The EP will be pressed on high quality CD-R.

Print editions of exhibition artwork will be engraved in vinyl and printed by hand (hand burnished) on 44gsm Kozuke Ivory or White washi (Japanese printmaking paper), pasted on to plywood and varnished for preservation.
