I came across an orphanage which is situated in a squatter camp/slum area. It is run by an elderly couple and they have about 40 children between the ages of 18 months to 18 years of age. The couple has no source of income as they depend solely on their social security grant and that of 15 of the children they look after. The rest of the children do not receive the social security grant as they do not possess proper documentation (i.e. birth certificate) which would then enable them to apply for the grant. In total, they have to make do with the collective R5700 (ZAR) as the individual children receive R380 (almost $40). They use this money to buy groceries which is meant to last them the entire month, toiletries, clothing and transportation to and from school for the school going children.
I have tried to assist where I can by doing a toiletry drive, especially for the girl children as female sanitary products are quite costly. I have also started a winter clothes drive whereby I have called on friends and family to donate warm winter clothing for these babies as we approach winter here in South Africa.
I am now reaching out to you, pleading for your assistance. If you can, in any way assist, please do, whether it's by donating clothing, monetary donation or by donating your time and visiting the orphanage (for those who are in Cape Town).
I thank you in advance,
