Opening Minds in North Korea

Update posted by Dan Milner On Aug 07, 2018

Our crowdfunder has now ended and we want to say a big thank you to everyone who saw the value in what we're trying to do and supported us. Your support is a massive help in getting this project off the ground and very much appreciated.

This was the first time in 30 years of adventuring that I have tried to help fund an "adventure" trip through crowdfunding, and it proved quite a learning experience. I had no idea how it would be received, what reach it would have and how well it would do financially. Initial ambitions of our campaign gathering support from far and wide throughout the mountain biking community proved naive, but instead a solid core of supporters stepped forward, seeing the merit in what we are trying to do.

As always its often about seeing the big picture rather focussing on the details and while if we were travelling to another destination we may have gathered more support, fortunately at least 76 of the 10,000+ people who viewed our page did read about the true aims of this trip and donated. Getting people to understand why we needed to try to fund this trip this way was the biggest obstacle by all accounts.

So by helping this campaign you are now part of history in the making and whatever else we come back with, we will have stories, postcards, photo prints and slideshows to share with you.

But aside from mementos, the real aim of this trip is to open minds and you are part of that. Thankyou.

Never one to miss a party ... We've extended our original trip plan by two days to be in North Korea for the DPRK's 70th birthday celebrations.

2018 is the 70th year of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and public celebrations are planned for the 9th and 10th of September and we'll be some of the few foreigners in Pyongyang to see them.

I'm hoping these will make for some interesting photo opportunities to throw into the mix for those of you who have signed up for limited photo prints, but whatever happens it will be a day or two to remember.

Yay! We now have our Visas issued by the North Korea authorities, meaning that it's 100% GO! for the trip. While the crowdfunder hasn't reached the target hoped, we're seizing this special opportunity to see inside this intriguing country and appreciate the help given by everyone so far — a big help to make this project happen and we say a big THANKYOU to everyone who has contributed or signed up for any of the rewards. It will be amazing and we are very, very excited!

After much prodding we've added 2 sets of limited edition, signed fine art photo prints to the rewards available when backing our trip to North Korea. Drawing on my 20 years as a professional photographer, I'll be shooting and selecting some eye-opening scenes to offer as fine art prints, post trip. Expect reportage street scenes and unique mountain bike moments to choose from.

On our return, I'll offer a choice of 3 images to those that pledged, each available as either a 60x40cm or 80x60cm fine art print, professionally and beautifully printed on Hahnemule 280g photo paper and despatched to you in a sturdy tube packaging. Each print will be numbered out of 10 and signed. All you have to do is decide which size and donate the appropriate amount and spend the next couple of months getting excited about the images you'll choose from!

North Korea + Dan Milner's eye = an interesting piece of wall art you can be sure.

With our campaign now off to a solid start, we've just finished working out our route through North Korea and exactly where we're planning to ride. We're splitting our time between 4 places, starting with some no-doubt eye-opening cultural experiences in the capital Pyongyang, before basing ourselves at the foot of Mount Myohyang for a few days to explore the rocky trails that rise above thick deciduous forest . A visit to the "international Friendship Museum" here is a must, we're told.

Then we'll jump on a once-per-year flight to the far east corner of North Korea and the highest peak on the peninsular, Mount Paekdu, where Harald will no doubt humble us with his extreme riding skills. Then we'll finish up on the coast at Chilbosan staying with a family for a real insight into North Korean life, while giving us chance to ride some challenging rock gardens in the nearby hills.

Then its back to Pyongyang for some "Wish you were here" postcard shopping.

I've heard Woburn Sands and N. Korea have a lot in common... some great curry houses and lofts that haven't been cleared out in decades!! Enjoy!
