For My Open Heart Surgery

Hello everyone. I am Raymond Ferrer, 23 years old, a resident of Camiguin Island, Calayan, Cagayan. I was born with a hole in my heart called Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). Having been born and lived in a remote island, we barely had enough money to go to the mainland for proper check up when we were kids. So I was not even aware that I had a heart problem. I was already 18 years old when I first learned of my illness. My then doctor prescribed 2 medicines (Lanoxin and Aspirin), hoping that these meds will be able to close the hole. I relied on these medicines for years because we did not have money for follow up check-ups and a more thorough examination. Unfortunately, both did not help improve my condition.

Five years later, my family decided that I go through another check-up, this time in Tuguegarao City. The doctor who attended to me referred me to a cardiologist at the Philippine Heart Center. The cardiologist advised me that I need to go through an open heart surgery within six months (by February 2019) as the left side of my heart was already enlarged with moderate aortic regurgitation and prolapse of right coronary cusp of the aortic valve. If I don’t go through the surgery, my condition will get worse and I may need to have a valve replacement.

The surgical rate at the Philippine Heart Center for this specific surgery costs around Php500,000. My family doesn’t have the financial capability to fund my operation. My parents do not have permanent work and our youngest sibling just graduated from college. My brother, who is only a contractual employee at LGU-Calayan, already has his own family. I am the breadwinner of the family despite my unstable income from online selling.
