Emma is a very sweet, loving and energetic Boxer girl who will be nine years old in November.  She joined me at eight weeks of age in late January 2005 (two weeks after puppy pic above), and we've been through thick and thin together.  She weathered a lumpectomy in 2007, which resulted in a clean biopsy.  Whew!

Our DilEmma:  She had been limping for several days, and I decided it was time for the doc.  After seeing a local vet on September 3, I decided that we needed to find a different care provider.  We received a recommendation via a wonderful "animaltarian," and we are working our way towards a diagnosis and care plan for Emma.  After two vet visits, we have a short-term care plan, but her diagnostics and care are incomplete and ongoing.

Like many, I have been hit hard by the recession, and her issues have presented the dilemma of juggling the costs of daily living with bringing some relief to my loyal and comedic companion of so many years.  In better times, I participated in dog rescue myself.  In the last couple years, I have experienced unemployment, homelessness and a storage locker robbery that cleaned me out of most of my personal possessions--I have nothing of value to sell as a result.  I am still struggling to regain ground, and there has been progress, but it's a long road.  A family member paid for her initial vet visit--all except two of my immediate family are deceased, so there are limitations as to how much I can ask of family.   Updates are ongoing, so please follow us!

Thank you from Emma and Kathleen!

The Latest

Update posted by Kathleen McBrair at 06:54 am

Well, here we are back in Northern Wisconsin, not a bad thing in and of itself.  However, still doing the hard-core job hunting with few responses and getting little sleep and no privacy.  I have run out of Rimadyl, and the joint chews are nearly gone.  I spent myself out. . . . .

More Good and Bad

Update posted by Kathleen McBrair at 11:31 am

Hello all:  Emma definitely seems to be on the upswing, but we will have to continue the chews and Rimadyl indefinitely.  So that's the good news.  The bad news is that we have to move (less than two weeks away) as there is just no guarantee that I will be. . . . .

A Hitch and Some Progress

Update posted by Kathleen McBrair at 12:40 pm

Hello all:  It has been quite a week!  Emma is generally improving, but a week ago today, she managed to injure her front right leg--the same side as her troubled hind leg!  After a thorough check of her feet, leg and shoulder, I could not determine the problem and made. . . . .

The Non-Update Update

Update posted by Kathleen McBrair at 10:58 pm

This is going to read more like a weather update.  A good part of the Midwest has been in the grip of a humidity and heat wave for the last two days.  Since we have been taking a couple showers a day to prevent heat stroke (brachycephalics do not do. . . . .

New Vet

Update posted by Kathleen McBrair at 11:54 am

Please click on title below avatar above to see entire update.  Thank you! Emma and I have found a new vet who is very experienced with geriatric dogs AND brachycephalics.  The best news is that she will avoid anesthesia for x-rays unless deemed absolutely necessary to get good films.  I. . . . .

One Step

Update posted by Kathleen McBrair at 08:44 pm

Emma saw Dr. Heaton today, and there is no diagnosis.  He prescribed joint chews and would like her back in two weeks for sedated x-rays if there is no improvement.  He detected no obvious hip or knee deformities but suspects spinal involvement.
