Please consider partnering with the One-room Schoolhouse to nurture student growth and opportunity in small group learning environments. Studies show that children achieve more, engage more, and retain more in smaller groups. Public school classrooms typically contain 25-30 students and one educator. As a result, teachers note significant behavioral concerns, lack of student engagement, decreased timely feedback, little to no individual help, decreased parental communication, and teacher burnout. Students tend to get lost in the stack or "fall through the cracks" of the education system. This is an ongoing issue that has yet to be resolved. Instead, we change the curriculum, lower expectations, revamp the grading system, develop laxed behavioral policies, change the learning platform, eliminate due dates for assignments, and require educators to complete several hours of professional development--none of these actions address the root problem.
The One-room Schoolhouse embraces small group instruction. Small groups provide more opportunities and advancements for students, their families, and the communities. Imagine an educational setting consisting of 10 students and one or two educators. Children would be presented with two-thirds more of everything: individual instruction, personalized teacher feedback, significantly more parental involvement, and improved peer/teacher rapport. Teachers could quickly identify areas of concern, develop effective remedies, and implement strategies to mediate issues. In addition, students would have more opportunities to learn from experiencing the world around them. Field trips would be cheaper, easier, and more frequent to enhance student learning and solidify content. The One-room Schoolhouse the vision of educational change that will shape the future leaders of the country.
