At every corner there seems to be someone asking for help. It’s so easy to become numb to the needs of others as a result. But every now and again, something catches your eye and pulls at your heart strings a little more than usual. That’s exactly what happened when Andrew cycled past this little family on one of his morning bike rides. Something just told him to turn around and go back.
Everyone has a story, and no matter who you are or what you’ve done in your life to get to that point of desperation, everyone deserves a second chance.
You may ask, why this family? What about the countless others that we see begging at street corners daily or lining up outside shelters night after night.
The truth is, there’s no extra special reason why this family has been chosen to be highlighted to help. It was simply a calling that could not be left unheard. It all starts with one act of kindness that creates a ripple effect for the future.
This is a family of 7 that has been split up as the shelters did not have space for all of them and wouldn’t allow them to all stay together.
This couple both have children of their own from previous relationships. Mom had a husband that passed away and Dad’s wife left him and the kids. Both lost their jobs and have no family to turn to for help.
Andrew very kindly put them up in a hotel for a few nights with the help of some of his friends who contributed. He washed the clothes they have as the shelter doesn’t allow them to.
Andrew has helped create their CV’s as well and we’re trying to find them work.
It’s exceptionally hard to find a shelter that will host the whole family. It is also very expensive to keep them in a shelter (It’s R450 a night)
The family does not have a bank account, however all funds donated to this family will go to Andrew who will manage all the funds and ensure it is distributed and used correctly.
Any help will be appreciated!
