Campaign Story
This fundraiser was initiated by Sacred Heart School -Ateneo De Cebu Batch 2006 alumni in collaboration with Cebu's fashion designers to help frontliners of the coronavirus pandemic by sewing personal protective equipment suits for donation. Any remaining funds will be used to purchase alcohol and disinfectants and turned over to Cebu Medical Society.
Why are we doing this?
Last March 21, the Philippine Heart Association (PHA) confirmed the death of a young cardiologist due to COVID-19. The doctor, the group said, “lost his young life while fulfilling his duties as a doctor.”
Earlier, the Alliance of Health Workers (AHW) expressed alarm over the number of health workers who got exposed to the virus as they continue to be in the frontlines without proper PPE.
The Philippine Hospital Association told the House of Representatives on March 11 that there is a “grave deficit” of PPEs, causing doctors to improvise. Old linen is used to make cloth masks, and raincoats are used as bare-minimum hazardous material suits.
Why is there a shortage in PPEs?
The surge of patients and the need to assume that they could be infected with COVID-19 led to increased PPE use, hence the shortage.
One possible COVID-19 patient will consume about 12 full PPEs in a day—six for the nurse who monitors every four hours, three for the resident who checks on him/her, one for the consultant who supervises, one for the lab person, and one for the x-ray person. This is if nothing urgent happens. So you can imagine with the influx of patients, even the most well-stocked hospital will be depleted in a matter of days.
What can we do to contribute?
In response to this global crisis, we've partnered with Cebu Fashion designers and they are now focusing their efforts on manufacturing PPE starting with the suits. They have spent a lot of time researching the appropriate medical textiles and details of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for our doctors and nurses and made sure they sure they are approved by the hospital.
Our initial plan is to donate 500 complete PPE suits (material & labor - Php600 ($12) = Php300,000 ($6,000) to Public Hospitals where among their requests are adequate PPE's.
How can you help during the lockdown?
As much as health workers are glorified as heroes, they also worry for their own safety. So let's do our part!
Let's protect our front-liners! Let's help each other provide them with adequate equipment and ensure their working environment is safe enough for them not to fall victim to the virus.
Even though we're all at home, we can still do our part and help those on the front lines by contributing whatever we can!
