I was told to write a compelling story. I thought I don’t have a compelling story. No one is dying of cancer. I thank God that I do not have a compelling story. But this is what I do have. I have a fabulous husband who works very hard every day. When the earthquake that devastated Haiti hit, he went to help secure housing and fresh water. I was in the Peace Corps and can honestly say that I not only saved lives but help a small handful of people live better lives. My husband has a good job. I have worked in public health for the past 15 years. When 2008 hit state and federal funding for public health programs was pulled. I was hire to develop programs 5 different times only to find out after three months in that I would not be paid because the funding was cut. They say they economy is rebounding. I have applied consistently for an average of 15 jobs per day with no results. NO RESULTS. Every once in a while I get a rejection letter. I am a very abled bodied person very willing to work, but at 50, know one will hire me. I am too old and too smart. I went to a job interview with a 25 yr/o interviewing me. I used the word “systemic” once and the interviewer had a puzzled look on her face for the next 15 minutes. I realized she was trying to figure out what the word meant. I desperately want a job where I can help people, but I find that I’m the one needing help. I remain optimistic. I am an able bodied person who does not want a handout but have found myself temporarily needing one.
