The On Second Thought Story
My name is Jenn Weiden, and a few months ago I decided to chase a lifelong dream I’d had of owning and operating a small independent specialty consignment shop. On Second Thought opened in April 2012 in historic downtown Islamorada, Florida. The first few months have seen a huge outpouring of community support and have been a striking success.
As the store has evolved and found its niche, growing the space is crucial to securing the future of the store. Today is an unparalleled opportunity for On Second Thought to cement its long term future and expand at the same time!
The first three months have seen many successful community events such as a fundraiser for Keys Kids Art, live music on the lawn featuring local artists and an all-female band, the introduction of a Local Artists' Gallery featuring a new local artist each month and donations to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and MARC House. Expansion into the adjacent outdoor space and the addition of new business platforms will help make more room for more merchandise with a better selection, bigger community events, and a new space for childrens' consignment clothing and accessories. If you’ve been to the store, you’ll know that this location has the charm and ambience that makes it simply feel like it was always meant to be a consignment boutique.
How You Can Help
While the first few months have been a great success, it has been a bootstrap effort since day one and donations from an already supportive local community would certainly help with expansion and reserves during slow times . Help raise the funds for the expansion and additions by donating to the cause and choose from a variety of rewards, including store credit or gift certificates, essentially making your donation the equivalent of a “pre-purchase.” Please consider helping to make "On Second Thought" a community project! If you can’t afford to donate, help spread the word to consignment store lovers you know who might be able to help out. I know many of you locally love the store and want to see it stay and thrive – here’s your chance to help! All donors will get their names displayed on a prominent "Patrons of On Second Thought" poster in the store, in addition to the perks and rewards listed for each donor level.
Help get this project funded and I promise Islamorada will have a long term institution in On Second Thought, with a great selection of carefully curated treasures, a deep commitment to community, and an advocate for free thought and expression. An African Proverb says "It takes a village to raise a child." Perhaps in this instance, it takes a village to raise a consignment shop! I hope you agree and will consider pitching in.
