Omulu Capoeira Guanabara Brooklyn’s 1st annual Batizado

On behalf of Omulu Capoeira Guanabara Brooklyn, a unique martial arts school in Brooklyn, we're honored to invite you to support our 2013 Batizado, a series of workshops culminating in a ceremony, to be held August 29th – September 1st, 2013. This event is an opportunity for students’ dedication and hard work over the course of the year to be recognized by the mestres of the group and by their fellow students. Throughout the year, we work to share capoeira with the Brooklyn community and to inspire our students.We need your financial support to raise the $7,000 we need to put on the first-ever Omulu Capoeira Guanabara Brooklyn Batizado event!

Who We Are

Omulu Capoeira Guanabara is an international organization dedicated to promoting the art of Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian art that combines martial arts, dance, music and acrobatics, through the development of high-quality training academies, professional performance groups, and community culture and education programs. In late 2011, we formed the Brooklyn chapter of Omulu. We offer classes four times a week; our doors are always open to beginners, and we have a pay-what-you-can policy for our students – even if you can’t afford to pay our fees, you are welcome to train with us.

Our Event

‘Batizado’, or ‘Baptism’, is a Capoeira tradition. It is a multi-day event that includes workshops and culminates in the Batizado itself – the ceremony where new students are initiated into the art and advanced students graduate to higher belt levels. We are inviting three world-renowned Capoeira Master Teachers, or Mestres, to teach the workshops and officiate the graduation ceremony; in addition, instructors and students from other branches of Omulu Guanabara from across the U.S. and around the world will be coming to New York to participate in the event. And of course, our families, friends, and members of the community will be there to celebrate with us.

How We’ll Use the Funds

Putting on a large event such as a Batizado is a logistically complex, expensive endeavor, and we need your help! We are looking for sponsors to help us cover our major expenses such as space (gym) rental and fees, marketing material costs, airfare for our Mestres and various small administrative expenses. We are a not-for-profit, small organization, and these costs quickly run into the thousands. And though our students pay a fee to participate in the event, we keep that fee reasonable to encourage as many of our students as possible to share in this important tradition.
