Oakland to The University of Sydney

My name is Kumi Hodge and I'm 20 years old. I was born and raised in Oakland, California. I recently graduated from Stanford University in June with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Education.

Why Am I Fundraising:

I was invited to the University of Sydney to present my work at a learning sciences conference. Unfortunately, my family must pay for conference fees & travel expenses out of pocket and we cannot provide the full amount of funds needed. 

Why Am I Going to Sydney:

Last year, I worked on a course project with a few of my classmates that focused on how computers affect learning. The project was a success. During that following summer, we decided to analyze the data we collected, write a research paper, and submit it to an academic journal to be published.

Now, our research is soon to be published in a peer-reviewed academic journal and will be presented at the International Conference of the Learning Sciences (ICLS) in Sydney.

I would like to travel to the conference because it sets an example for other African-American boys and girls growing up in Oakland. There aren't many opportunities available for black kids in Oakland public schools to explore the world beyond the neighborhoods in which they live. I want to show the youth in my community that schooling can and does provide you with opportunities to experience the world.
