My Story

Hello! My name is Georgiana. I was born with a rather rare congenital malformation - radial hemimelia (congenital bone malformations, lack of radius). Basically, my hands are devoid of forearm and they are bent strongly inside. The bones of the legs are also deformed.

My whole life was a battle. For 25 years I and my parents have been fighting. Our victory does not mean health, it does not mean I can get - once - a whole person. For us a winning battle means I can use my hands more. A bit more. A step forward to being autonomous. To take care of myself. To not resign myself.

That's how I got to take the Bachelor’s Degree Diploma (now I'm enrolled at the Master Studies). Because I refused to say that it’s impossible. I know I can’t have a social life like most young people of my age. But I would be very happy if I could hold the mouse better in my palm. Or to use the keyboard more easily. Or the spoon, or the comb, or ....

In all these years, "I have collected" 20 surgeries and hundreds of days of hospitalization. Some surgeries have had some results. Others less. And yet I have not lost my hope. Not even when doctors repeated to us that there was not much to do.

At the end of the last year I was in Bucharest for a consultation by Dr. Kursat Kara. With the help of this doctor, after a surgery in Turkey, I could use my right hand better. The surgery is quite complex (involves bone and ligament repositioning, bone implantation and forearm fixation in a position as close to the natural position as a normal hand). No doctor in Romania can guarantee my surgery. The only hope is to do the surgery abroad - in Turkey or in Western Europe.

The cost of the surgery in Turkey is 9,400 Euro (+ flight tickets + 15 days hotel accommodation). Maybe it sounds weird, but this is the price of a hand. This is the price of hope.

Unfortunately, I can‘t collect alone this money. The only income of my family is my pension. My father is unemployed and my mother is my personal assistant - she has to be with me all the time.

With your help I could use one hand, I could work, to earn my living like the rest of the people. There is no alternative for me. I've been fighting for 25 years with this terrible disease, I'll fight even further. I will continue to hope and to seek a solution for my new life.

Buna! Eu sunt Georgiana Nicoleta. M-am nascut acum 25 de ani. Am venit pe lume cu o malformatie congenitala destul de rara – hemimelie radiala (malformatii congenitale osoase, cu lipsa osului radius). Practic mainele mele la nastere nu au avut legatura cu antebratul, fiind si mult curbate spre interior. De asemenea, sunt deformate si oasele picioarelor.

Intreaga mea viata de pana acum a fost o lupta. De 25 de ani eu si parintii mei ne luptam. Victoria noastra nu inseamna sanatate, nu inseamna sa pot sa ajung – candva – un om intreg. Pentru noi o batalie castigata inseamna sa pot sa imi folosesc mai mult mainile. Putin mai mult. Un pas inainte spre a avea ceva mai multa autonomie.

Stiu ca nu pot sa am o viata sociala asa cum au majoritatea tinerilor de varsta mea. Dar m-as bucura nespus daca as putea sa pot sa tin mouse-ul mai bine in palma. Sau sa folosesc mai usor tastatura. Sau lingura, sau pieptanul, sau…

In 25 de ani “am strans” 20 de operatii si sute de zile de spitalizare – toate aici, in Romania. Au fost interventii chirurgicale care au incercat sa creasca functia mainii. Unele operatii au si avut ceva rezultate. Altele mai putin. Si totusi nu mi-am pierdut speranta. Nici macar atunci cand medicii ne tot repetau ca nu prea mai este mare lucru de facut.

La sfarsitul anului trecut am fost la Bucuresti pentru un consult oferit de Dr. Kursat Kara. Cu ajutorul acestui medic, in urma unei interventii chirurgicale in Turcia, as putea sa imi folosesc mai bine mana dreapta. Operatia este una destul de complexa (presupune repozitionari ale oaselor si ligamentelor, implant de os si fixare a antebratului intr-o pozitie cat mai apropiata de pozitia naturala a unei maini normale). Din pacate niciun medic din Romania nu imi garanteaza reusita operatiei aici, in tara. Singura speranta este sa fac operatia in strainatate – in Turcia.

Costul operatiei din Turcia este de 9.400 Euro (+ banii de bilete de avion + 15 zile cazare hotel-la spital o sa fiu cateva zile internata,iar dupa aceea trebuie sa stau acolo la hotel pentru a ma duce la control timp de 14 zile iar a 15 a zi sa-mi scoata firele). Poate suna ciudat, dar cam atat costa o mana. Cam atat costa o speranta.

Din pacate singura nu pot strange acesti bani. Singurul venit al familiei mele este pensia mea. Tatal meu este somer iar mama este asistentul meu personal – ma insoteste oriunde, ea trebuie sa fie in permanenta cu mine.

Cu ajutorul vostru as putea sa imi folosesc - in sfarsit! - o mana. Daca aceasta operatie o sa reuseasca o sa pot sa muncesc, sa imi castig existenta ca si restul oamenilor. Pentru mine nu exista alternativa. Am luptat 25 de ani cu aceasta teribila boala, o sa lupt si mai departe. O sa sper in continuare si o sa caut o solutie pentru noua mea viata.

Am toate actele doveditoare asupra mea si asupra faptului ca operatie trebuie facuta in Turcia.
