A quarter of the Jewish victims of the Holocaust were children. In the spirit of active remembrance, a small school in Wellington collected 1.5 million buttons, each a symbol of one unlived life. The buttons were gathered from all parts of New Zealand and from across Europe over a three-year period, and it is now intended to incorporate them into a memorial. This site is to raise money to fund the first phase of the memorial project - commissioning a design and promoting the project to gather the full funds needed to build it. To learn more about the project, and hear why its so important to the children, please watch our video or follow our links. Check out the updates page for the latest developments and designs for the memorial. Please note - if you need a reciept or an alternative way to donate, please contact us at [email protected] or make a bank transfer to The Holocaust Centre of New Zealand, account number 03 0515 0507281 00 putting "buttons" as your reference.

I have just come away from a lovely celebration to mark the 104th birthday of Sir Nichloas Winton in the UK. Nicky saved 669 children from the nazis on the now famous Winton trains. Some of 'Winton's children were at the event where I also met Vera who told me about the button project. What a fantastic educational project! I wish you all the very best with it. much love, Dawn Kohn x
