Nurturing Young Minds in Phillippines

If you’re reading this you might know me. If you don’t yet, I hope you soon will.

You might know me as the cheerful girl, the writer, the artist or the little girl teaching little children. For those of you who don’t know me, I have an immense passion for travel, learning new languages, cultural understanding and development. I speak 7 languages including English, Hindi, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and Bengali. I have been a volunteer teaching assistant teaching English and Mathematics in government funded primary schools in India for over four years now. The relationships I have forged and the time I have spent in doing the same are definitely some of the most precious in my life. Through the people I have met there and through the conversations I have had, I have within me the determination to make change and to spread love to those that need it most.

With my last summer vacations before I start with college incoming, I want to step out into the world. I will be spending the month of July volunteering in the Philippines, assisting kindergarten teachers in the rural Palawan area. Similar to India, majority of children are sent to work in farms instead of to school. Also, there exists an extremely high drop out rate in kindergarten itself due to sickness and malnutrition. This leads to an exponential rise in rates of illiteracy and adversely affects population growth and progress that results in a great loss of human resource potential on a national and eventually global scale. There is also an immense shortage of qualified educators in the public education sector in the Philippines giving birth to further problems regarding dwindling literacy rates. This program aims to give them better opportunities through providing them with safety, education and a balanced diet with nutritious food.

I will be working with volunteerhq.org in July and I need to raise enough money for program fees, transportation, accommodation and equipment.

These types of experiences are ones that ultimately help us to touch others lives positively and change us for the better. They teach us so much about ourselves, the world, and the power of compassion. I would be extremely thankful to anyone who is willing to help me with this project and make it possible for me to have the opportunity of working with children to bring them better circumstances and a future to look forward to. Anything helps, no matter how small. Thank you so much for your help and support!
