Hi everybody,

I am a 2nd year university paediatric nursing student, recently accepted onto the Work The World nursing elective where I will be volunteering in Sri Lanka for 2 weeks in March 2016. During my time in Sri Lanka I will be working directly with healthcare professionals in the paediatric departments of their main hospital in Kandy.

My reason for this appeal is to raise funds to contribute towards the cost of my flights. To achieve this, I will be donating the majority of my hair to the Little Princess Trust as well as holding various raffles and bake sales before my departure date.

From a young age, I have wanted to travel and help children who are less fortunate than myself. Beginning my nursing training has given me the drive to make this dream a reality. Being able to see firsthand how healthcare professionals in a developing country are able to adapt and maintain high standards in an under resourced environment will, I believe, inspire me to strive to become just like them.

During my time in Sri Lanka I will be volunteering in various departments of the hospital such as paediatric theatres, oncology and medical wards. I will also have the opportunity to help treat diseases such as dengue fever, a disease that in 2014 had more than 46,000 suspected cases in Sri Lanka alone, as apposed to the 541 cases reported in the UK in 2014. This is a dramatic difference of over 8000%.

I have chosen to partake in the Work The World nursing programme because they are the leading provider of tailored healthcare electives and internships. Their structured overseas placement will enable me to gain great knowledge and experience as well as providing me with the opportunity to witness the challenge of global health delivery, and where appropriate, use my newly acquired skills to support the overseas team. I know that this experience is going to contribute enormously to my future nursing practice as well as helping me to develop my clinical skills and myself as a person.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to be able to make a difference in an under resourced area of the world and any donation no matter how small will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your support!
