Hi guys, thank you so much for taking the time to visit my page!
As you all know I’m coming to the end of my nursing training in York this year, and to go out with a bang I’ve applied to volunteer for 4 weeks in a hospital in Tanzania, Africa! I will be leaving on the 15th August this year and have organised it through the well-known volunteering company ‘Plan My Gap Year’.
While I’m there I’ll be helping to look after local people in emergency and community settings. The hospital mainly specialises in women’s health and the delivery and care of new born babies so I’ll also be helping out with that. I am really looking forward to it and feel that it is going to be an invaluable learning experience as well as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Healthcare out in Tanzania is very limited, I see this trip as an opportunity to share my skills and experience from my training with other health professionals working out there, and vice-versa. The town I am based in has many areas of poverty and hardship and I would love to feel that my time volunteering and nursing those in my care was making a real difference.
After my final week at the hospital I have planned to challenge myself further and attempt Mount Kilimanjaro – the highest mountain in Africa. It will take me seven days to reach the top and make my way back down the mountain and altitude sickness is very common!
This volunteering experience is completely self-funded. I’m organising it through the non-government funded company Plan My Gap Year who provide me with accommodation and food for the four weeks I’m at the hospital. It is unfortunately not cheap to undertake a voluntary placement in Tanzania; therefore I am aiming to raise money for my trip through this site. I would be forever grateful for any donations (or sponsorships for the climb), large or small to help get me there. I will also be organising some extra fundraising events in the coming weeks and will keep you posted.
