Ntiamoah Foundation Mobile Library

Ntiamoah Foundation Mobile Library (NFML) is an initiative borne out of the need to take the love for reading, creativity and knowledge to the doorstep of each and every child in the Foundation’s catchment area and beyond.

The project started with a few books purchased with the very little donation money given to us by well-wishers and proponents of the idea of a Mobile library. This money as little as it was, was used judiciously to purchase four hundred books from the rotary book depot in Tema, at ridiculously low prices of as little as one Ghana Cedis. Other people seeing our efforts also donated their used story books to us and before we knew it, the Ntiamoah Foundation Mobile Library was born.

The project started as pilot with three cluster school in the capital of the Birim North district- New Abirem. The pilot lasted a year by which time; there had been a tremendous interest in the Library and a great demand for it in the area.

Going into the Mobile Library project, it was envisioned that a time will come that the demand for it will be so high that our small staff of five, a single Van and library books of about three thousand five hundred would be insufficient to effectively impact children in all our communities.

Project achievements!!!

• Since the implementation of the programme in 2015, five thousand and thirty (5,030) children have had access and continue to access library books supplied by the Mobile Library project
• Seventeen (17) Schools from the ten (10) communities in the district have benefited from the programme.
• Altogether seven (7) teachers, two (2) headteachers and seventy-six (76) students have been recipients of our reward scheme
• In 2019 Birim North district took the first position in the regional district Basic Education Certificate Examination in the Eastern region, all due to the interventions including the Mobile library which has been implemented in the area

PROJECT SUPPORT NEEDED

• Due to the fact that the project targets whole schools, the resources needed (books, human resources) are very limited. In order to increase the pace at which the project is being implemented, the organisation needs a constant stream of Library books supply which is currently lacking.
• In order to sustain the project in the communities once the library team have moved on to a new school; there is the need to leave behind some books and trained personnel to continue with the Mobile Library. This involves financial cost to the organisation which at the moment the organisation is unable to cover.
• The reward scheme which is affiliated to the project also costs the organisation quite a fair amount of money and in order to sustain this, we need to seek financial or other kinds of support.
• The cost to the Foundation of running the Mobile Library stands at a hefty GHS 16,000 a year, with the reward scheme costing a further GHS 15,000 per year. In total an amount of GHS 31,000 ( £ 4290.79) annually.
• Based on the above, this campaign is geared towards raising funds for the sustainability of the Mobile Library.
