Both my brother and father were diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease stage 4 three years ago, placing them both for dialysis treatments. Due to pandemic, my brother’s transplant (with me being his donor) was put on hold. The entire 2020 and 2021 was a tough battle for my brother as his health was not stable resulting us to many hospitalizations and draining us financially. We did a fund-raising last December 2021 for the transplant of the two. But sadly, my father was diagnosed with cancer in the pancreas stage 4 in 2022 which left us to just push for my brother’s transplant and my dad to focus to battle against cancer. The funds raised previously was used for medical clearances and treatments for our two patients while processing my brother’s transplant which we started March 2022 under the social services of a government hospital. After a year of so many back and forth with resident doctors – I was rejected as my brother’s donor as my lowest kidney function that I can donate to him is at 43% and the standard is 45%. We do not have any other donors and my country doesn’t have donor registration for kidney donation.

Having done a lot of research for my case, I know I can still save my brother and confident that I can take care of my own health even with just one kidney. I tried my second chance by consulting with a surgeon under private hospital. Last May, after repeating all the test on my side, I was approved to be my brother’s donor. We targeted end of July to have the transplant. We are so close but this journey keeps on challenging us (still never ever giving up) as my brother got confined last June due to an infection on his dialysis access. He was hospitalized for almost two weeks and went through blood transfusion as he would be needing an operation to remove the AV graft access. Thankfully, he is recovering now and was able to get back to dialysis through a temporary access on his neck. Given that he went through blood transfusion, there will be tests that need to be repeated to ensure he didn’t developed antibodies that can affect our compatibility for the transplant. If all goes well, our tentative date for the transplant is August 18, 2023.

His last hospitalization decreased the saved fund for his transplant significantly. I have exhausted all the government assistance I could reach out to for both of my dad and my brother. I am the only one with work in the family and functioning as frontliner for the entire household. I don’t want to give up specially for my brother so I am asking your support – donate, share our link to your friends as it will help us get closer to our goal – a new life for my brother through the kidney transplant. The funds that we will be able to raise will be used on the cost of the transplant which is estimated at Php1,500,000 and at least for the first two months of his medication estimated Php30,000 to Php50,000 per month while I’m under recovery and not yet able to work.

As a gratitude to everyone who helped us and will be helping us on our previous fund raising and for this current one, I will be cooking meals once a week for fellow dialysis patients of the clinic of where my dad and brother are being treated. The meal that will be prepared are vegetarian and kidney-friendly (no preservatives) which will be consumed during dialysis treatments. These recipes are which I have researched, created, tested on my brother which helped him recover and decrease his medications during 2021 when his health was very unstable. We noticed in the dialysis clinic, most patients are buying from fastfood or 711 for the reason that it is cheap and no effort to prepare, but it is not helping them health-wise. We want to somehow share and educate that there is a cheap way to eat healthy. And through this small way help them save money a little and time on preparing their packed meal during dialysis treatment.
