Dear friends and family,

At the beginning of December I began a personal journey; I have been reflecting on what I have accomplished in this one “wild and precious life”. That included personal and professional goals, but for me specifically it also meant giving back to society, particularly those in desperate need.

This reflection created a sense of personal urgency – I want to make a difference and “pay-it-forward”. I know that to be of service to others will come back exponentially …and in many unexpected ways. Karma.

I have lived in Costa Rica for the past 13 years and found that there is a massive social stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS. Words cannot do justice to how terrible the situation is. There is a very special house here called HOGAR DE LA ESPERANZA – home of hope - located in San Jose that is solely focused on those most in need.

The home does not receive sufficient donations or help from families to operate. There is a critical requirement for the 28 existing residents and the extensive drop-in HIV/Aids population.

Hogar de la Esperanza operates on a “low barrier” philosophy. Anyone who needs help will be welcomed. No one is turned away (even though there are not enough beds) they continue to provide food, bathing facilities and clothing to people who drop in. Most street people do not attend this facility due to the discrimination factor and lack of knowledge about transmission of HIV so education is another critical component for the house. Simple things including the most basic necessities of food and personal hygiene products are needed. They are desperate for kitchen and laundry appliances.

Fifteen of my equally motivated and committed friends have agreed to help. We all want to make a positive difference in the lives of these people who have been socially excluded or abandoned by family and friends for being carriers of the virus HIV/AIDS.

Our goal is to receive $10,000 (or more!) (Wouldn’t that be wonderful?) in donations with an exact plan to purchase kitchen and laundry appliances as well as new mattresses and sheets for the home.

My promise to you is that we will personally oversee all of the donations, and we will install in the home the purchases made to provide improved living conditions to these persons who have been LEFT BEHIND. You can see from the photo’s why we care so much.
