Next step in the journey: Seminary

Dear Friends and Family,

In just a few short months, I will be embarking on a new kind of adventure. I’d like to share with you how I’ve come to this next step in my journey. After graduating from Dartmouth and student teaching the fall of 2012, I volunteered at Orphanage Emmanuel for 8 months. At Emmanuel, I taught reading and English, led Bible Studies, and discipled and counseled many teenage girls. As these teenagers shared with me the heaviness of what they have been through, I felt the great need to learn how to better lead them to the healing and freedom of the gospel. While back in the states for several months I took two classes via the Christian Counseling Education Foundation (CCEF). I then returned to Honduras to do an internship with Mission to the World in La Ceiba for 11 months. During my time there I worked with teen moms, street boys, and people of all ages in poor communities. Again I developed deep discipleship relationships with hurting people. So I took two more CCEF classes while in Honduras this past year. These classes have greatly impacted my ministry. They have taught me so much about how to come alongside those who are struggling and lead them to hope and change in the gospel.

After returning to the states in June, I have felt called to pursue further education full time. Though it is so hard to leave those I love in Honduras, I pray that by investing this time of my life to study how to counsel from God’s Word, He will use me to more deeply love and minister for the rest of my life. I hope and pray that He calls me back to Honduras, the beautiful and broken country that has captured my heart, but I will go wherever He sends me. For now, I will take this next step in the journey He has planned for me. Come Spring Semester (February), I will move down to Charlotte, North Carolina to start Reformed Theological Seminary’s two-year Masters of Christian Counseling program. I am very excited about this program; it is theologically rich, grounded in the Word of God, Gospel-centered and powerfully practical. It is also very closely connected with CCEF and has the same vision for restoring Christ to counseling and counseling to the Church.

I am currently living at home and working to save up for seminary. But because I have been doing volunteer missions since graduating college the costs are much more than what I have or could earn right now. The original cost of the whole 2-year program is $31,000. Thankfully I have been awarded some scholarships and my CCEF credits will transfer so that has reduced that price to around $20,000.
