New Year’s Wish for Sandra
You are about to hear an inspirational story of an incredible spirit on the journey against all odds. A story of strength of human spirit and the power of choice.
Little over two years ago my cousin, Sandra Savich was diagnosed with Lung Cancer.Unfortunately, cancer quickly spread to other vital organs. About one year ago she underwent surgery removing a tumor on her brain and recently she had to have another brain surgery as first wasn’t successful. We all thought, having a one brain surgery was difficult enough but two, was too much for one person to bear. To all of our amazement she continues to cope very well with her daily challenges.
Sandra is a fighter, She doesn’t surrender no matter what. It frustrates her the most that she tires easily, can’t work, support herself financially and spend more of her precious time with close friends and family.
In fact, she has always been independent; do it all myself type of gal. Throughout her life, she has been there to offer help, to listen and to encourage those in need. Sandra is one of those terrific people known for her impeccable work ethic. My cousin is known among her work colleagues to be most loyal, reliable, and hardest working team member. Like other heroines we come to know and admire, she does not let pain define her mental state of being. Instead she defies pain and re-defines strength; she makes the calls, certainly those that are in her power.
Her pure heart simply can’t be corrupted, no matter what curve balls life throws at her, Amazing, right? Sandra’s spirit is undefiable. Nothing can change her heart and undermine her determination to live. Her mind is programed to survive, to outlive her cancer.
Among her family and close friends Sandra is known for her great witt, lightness of being, and lovely spirit. In spite of her deteriorating health, she continues to stands tall and remains beautiful and bubbly with unaltered sense of humor.
In our city in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina people are known for their stubbornness, we call it “INAT”, Turkish word for stubbornness. There must be a whole lot of “INAT” in my cousin Sandra’s heart. It flows through her veins; it thrives in every inch of her being.
Great sense of humor is something many city dwellers from our home city of Mostar are known for. Jokes in Mostar are collectively referred as – “liskaluci”, and those who create jokes and maintain great sense of humor even in those hardest of the times are known as “liske”. Eh Sandra is for sure one “Mostarska Liska”; no lung cancer, no brain tumor is big enough to scare her into the state of fear or God forbid seriousness or surrender, defat I am not going to even mention. Defeat is nonexistent word in Sandra’s personal vocabulary.
Even though her spirit continues to thrive, Sandra needs our moral and financial support to continue to claim her victory over the fourth stage cancer one day at the time. Funds collected will be used for the medical expenses, transportation, and basic life expenses. It’s crucial she retains physical and mental strength and have access to nutrients she needs to re-build her immune system during rounds of chemotherapy and after two difficult brain surgeries. My wish for her in 2019 is that she remains strong, gets better and doesn’t have to worry about those basic life needs for time being.
