The Journey
Part 1 Diabetes and dialysis:
Over the last year, my brother Kitti has endured about 4 hours of dialysis, twice per week. This costs at least $400 per month. National healthcare has failed him, so I have helped him go to a private dialysis clinic. He has had repeated access point replacements or repositions. Even with that he has had perforation and embolism. The only sustainable solution is a kidney transplant. This gets him away from treatment that is not working for him, and frees the resources for those that it does work for. Poor thing, right?
Part 2 Surgery:
Pre-op costs about $2,000USD.
The surgery costs between $48,500-97,000USD and covers some post-op until 60 days after the surgery.
Part 3 Post-op regimen of checks and anti-rejection meds.:
Complications are not uncommon. The cost for infection, rejection, and other complications typically runs above $15K. Annual cost for anti-rejection drugs is ~$17K.
