Campaign Story
South Africa bear witness to an estimated 1,000 burns attacks a year, largely against women rejecting unwanted treatment or defending themselves against male attackers. Now these victims, often from impoverished backgrounds, are crowdfunding the thousands of rands it costs to treat their wounds.
Nester Gladys Ndebele from the Evaton, Small Farms, Gauteng is in urgent need of funds after she had to be discharged from the Hospital due to her medical aid no longer covering the costs of ICU where she was receiving care after she sustained superficial burns.
Since being discharged, Nester has been unable to take public transportation due to her fragile state and now relies on family and friends to transport her to and from the hospital in order for her dressing to be changed every monday which isn’t always possible.
Nester has endured so much for such an old woman and every time she starts making progress, she gets another infection and skin grafts need to be redone, which sets her back.
With surgical intervention that is to follow, Nester will require continued occupational therapy focusing on rehabilitation and functional rehabilitation until she is independent in the home and work environment. In order to achieve this, she will need to attend occupational therapy sessions one to two times a week, do skin crafting which cost about R70 000, skin therapy products, and possibly splints.
