Hi all,

On the 8th July 2018, I will be travelling to Nepal with a group of volunteers. On our travels, we will experience the culture of Nepal by learning about the customs, language and beliefs of the nation before setting off on a four week adventure. I will be spending two of the weeks at a local project in the city of Pokhara, teaching English to disadvantaged children.

Why Nepal?

Nepal is the 4th poorest Asian country despite being classed by many as one of the most beautiful with the Himalayas mountain range in the north and rainforests in the south. It is a nation heavily dependent on the tourism industry. This means that English is an important skill for young people to learn to find work tending to Western tourists and bring themselves out of poverty. The country was also hit by a devastating earthquake in 2015 and is still feeling its effects making volunteering here all the more important.

What will I be doing?

For the first few days of the 4 weeks I will be spending in Nepal, I will be learning about nepalese customs, culture and language in Kathmandu before travelling around the country for 2 weeks. I will then begin volunteering at a placement in Pokhara for a further 2 weeks, getting involved in local community projects.

How will I raise money?

On Friday the 30th of March, myself and two friends will be attempting the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge. This involves climbing three of the highest mountains in three different regions of Wales (Snowdon, Cadair Idris and Pen-y-fan) within 15 hours. I will be collecting sponsorships for this challenge to raise money for the trip and make the volunteering possible.

Thank you for your interest,

James
