D. is the parent of a child that I babysit.  I have known them for two years, and in those two years bad, sad and outright tragic things have happened to her.  Yet she still keeps her head up,  she never wallows in self-pity.  She knows that the only way to stay afloat is to work hard and be responsible for yourself and your actions.   She is a divorced single mom of three kids.  She supported her family by waitressing and bartending,  but she knew that she could not do that forever.  So 18 months ago she went back to school to learn medical and insurance coding.  She went to school full time,  kept her various serving jobs, and cared for her children.  She didn't whine and cry when she was dead tired,  she looked towards the goal and kept going.  She kept a 4.0 grade point average and found a job shortly after graduation.

She kept her bartending gig,  as that paid twice what her day job paid.

Then her car broke down.

She borrowed money, got a another car and that one broke down.

A family member died.

Her oldest son got in legal trouble.

She lost her bartending job, and with it, 75% of her monthly income.  After a month she had to apply for assistance, something that absolutely humiliated her.

She continually applies for, and is rejected for, bartending and waitressing jobs.

On December 17, 2012,  she arrived home to find that lightning had struck the apartment building and it was ablaze.    The next day the city condemned the building.  So she now finds herself broke AND homeless a week before Christmas.

The property managers can place her in another unit, in another complex in another school district, but that can take days.  And right now she has nothing,  she had no renters insurance.

All I want is for her to catch a break, for once.  All I am asking is if you could donate whatever you can,  and tell friends and family members.  This woman and her kids work so hard,  play by the "rules" and keep getting knocked down.   Wouldn't it be great to give this family enough to get into a nice apartment or rental home,  with furniture and clothing?

She would kill me if she knew I was doing this,  for that reason I have not given her name.

And the hits keep coming......

Update posted by Amy Rennerfeldt Rapp at 01:20 pm

The day after the building was condemned, D was allowed back in to get her cats and some posessions.   We are babysitting her boys and they are being very good guests.  Their mama taught them well.   That is the other thing you may not know, D helps to. . . . .

People can be so awesome.

Update posted by Amy Rennerfeldt Rapp at 01:10 pm

When I talked to D. this morning she was dropping off E, the 1st grader I babysit.  He still had a fever and his ear infection was still causing him pain.  She would be going through the apartment today,  she has 2 hours to grab what she can so they. . . . .
