He was a 66 year old proud gallant ex military officer, filled with humour. He talked of his active years with energy and passion. These together with his infectious smiles made him liked by both nurses and patients on the Tamakloe ward of the 37 Military Hospital.

Unfortunately, he was going to lose his left leg in three days. Sure he did lose it through an above-knee amputation. After some weeks, with tears in his eyes, I wheeled this man who once walked on his own to the ward into his son’s car without his left leg. He had lost it to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. His last words to me still resonate in my memory: “I was never a casualty of war, but I’m now a casualty of diabetes.” This man is part of the millions who are casualties of chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and heart diseases.

As a practicing nurse, I have seen many people suffer on the sickbed from preventable diseases. There has been this yearning in me to a make more impactful effort on lives – a yearning to prevent the healthy from getting unto the sickbed. This burning desire is motivated by the words in Thomas A. Edison’s quote: “the doctor of the future will give no medication but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease”. It is my wildest dream to become that “future doctor” in our present disease-stricken world.

I am interested in the use of nutrition and physical activity as self management tools in preventing and managing chronic diseases like obesity, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases among poor and vulnerable populations.

Fortunately, I now have an unconditional admission offer into the Master of Public Health (MPH) programme of the University of Sheffield, which is one of UK’s prestigious universities. With this offer, I see the realization of this dream of mine just some few efforts away.

Yes, my dreams are just some financial efforts away. Talk of the passion, energy, and intellectual potential. I have them all but the financial capabilities to pursue this degree, which will help me contribute to finding the best way of fighting the pandemic chronic diseases.

To be able to enroll in September 2018, I have to be able to raise $26000 towards the payment of tuition fees from now till June 2018.

I humbly count on all who can in any mean donate towards this course of mine.
