WHO ARE WE?

Hong Kong's recycling rate is decreasing year on year , as well landfills predicted to be full by 2020. With such worrying statistics, much more work needs to be done to combat this.

With a growing lack of trust in the governments recycling facilities, more and more organisations are taking it upon themselves to fix the waste issue. From litter collection points across the city to frequent beach cleanups, committed Hong Kong residents are doing their bit.

Sadly, the number of individuals taking part still needs to grow. That is why we set up our organisation, Waste Free Hong Kong.

Wanting to make environmentalism more accessible, our subgroup, HK Ploggers, was the first organisation to popularise plogging in Hong Kong, running plogging activities across the city since September 2018.

Working to tackle waste issues from all angles, we organise a 'Bun Run' in collaboration with Maxim's Cakes and arome every Wednesday evening to tackle food waste, Plogs every Friday evening as well as multiple workshops and hike cleanups across the week.

Currently the organisation consists of a very small, dedicated group of individuals all working full time jobs and doing what we are doing off our own back, which, although we do not mind doing, limits us to what we can achieve and our reach in the community.

We are looking for $60,000 HKD to help us with funding over the coming months. The funds raised will firstly help us to set ourselves up as a registered Social Enterprise, as well as helping us provide schools and organisations with high quality workshops and organise larger scale clean up events that reach as many people as possible.

A large majority of the funds will be for materials, marketing and media purposes. The rest is split between transport, dry cleaning and administrative work.

As we are hoping to grow as quickly as possible, we are hoping to reach our goal by July 30th.

OUR FUTURE PLANS

Over the coming 6-12 months, our goal is to establish ourselves as a registered Social Enterprise and apply for section 88 to enable us to register as a charity.

Once we have gotten the ball rolling and have established ourselves as a registered organisation, I (James) plan to take this full time and run workshops and activities throughout the week.

Being able to access individuals during school/work hours would enable us to make a much bigger impact, and hopefully empower more individuals to join the cause!

WHY SHOULD YOU HELP FUND US?

Waste Free Hong Kong was established in January 2018. Over the first year of establishment, our growth was relatively slow whilst we were getting an understanding of how to fit ourselves and what we do into the environmental groups to best achieve our goals.

Starting from September last year, we have begun to promote weekly events and have managed to collect over 20,000 plastic bottles, 10,000 metal cans, hundreds of thousands of cigarette butts as well as hundreds of kilograms of waste.

We have begun to gain attention from both local and international organisations for our work, having collaborated with brands such as lululemon, Maxim's and local gym Vegan Fitness, as well as charities and social groups to help Hong Kong society in different ways. For us, it is important not just to work hard ourselves, but to support those around us who are working hard to support society in Hong Kong.

Our main emphasis, which I believe helps us differ from other organisations, is that we make sustainability a huge focus. It is not just about waste collection, but also making sure what we collect, if possible, is recycled or reused.

As well as this, it is of the utmost importance to us that we encourage our volunteers to take steps towards a circular lifestyle of reusables through group workshops and discussions following cleanup events.
