- Hi, My name is Sonya, I am a volunteer or social worker, work for Women's Institution affiliated with the local church. I work providing information about health and nutrition, help nursing mothers, pregnant women, and toddler infants (aged 0 to 5 Years).
The regions or villages that I served are:
1. Mamberamo (Kampung Warembori, Kampung Yoke, Kampung Mantabori) These areas are located on the mouth of Mamberamo River. It takes about 1 night traveled from the capital city (Jayapura) by boat/speedboat crossing the river. We would have a group of mothers and children in each of the villages we visited, where we will share about how important is mother's and children health. We share also the important to plant vegetables because these areas are hard for plantation as it's surrounding by the river. We instill the importance of eating vegetables every day to supplement the nutrition of mother and children specifically.
2. Wamena / Yahukimo (Kurima village, Ibiroma village, Nisikni village, Kebianggen village, Sangkalpunu village) These areas are located in the highland area in Papua, to get there we use a small aircraft, belongs to M.A.F, and landed to Nisikni village. From there we will walk to other villages, it takes about 5 hours from Nisikni to Kebianggen, and Sangkalpunu. Our base-camp is in Nisikni village because only in Nisikni village has an airfield from MAF. In there we will provide the same Health Information as we delivered at Mamberamo, but because in the highlands people will only eat meat, sweet potatoes and vegetables, we recommend that they plant nuts to add nutrition because it is hard for them to get any other source of nutrition. We also teach mothers and children to read and write because these areas are so hard to reach.
These people are very happy because we can visit them every 2 months ... we also happy with the fact that we can come and help them with the knowledge that we have.
However, there are some obstacles that we have been going through:
With the lack of medical or health personnel and teachers to the place, we want to be there to help them. We have hope that we will go back there, so we are eager to ask for donations or help from those who hear or read this page. We are in need of bath soaps, laundry soap, hand-wash soap, towel, winter cloth (as it is cold in the mountains), female underwear for adult women and children, eating utensil, notebooks and stationery. We need money to buy those things about in a big amount as we have a number of villages (8 villages so far) that are need those stuffs. We are also need money for transportation to reach to every village using the small boats and the aircraft.
I hope you can reduce our work by providing help and services through donations for our trips to each village and also the materials needed to teach and share.
