Campaign Story
Dear Friend
I am trying to raise money for my parents farm which has been gripped by severe drought for the last 5 years.
The farm is in the Northern Cape province of South Africa.
https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/northern-cape-drought-the-huge-problem-no-one-is-talking-about/
My parents are both in their 60's and wanted to retire, but when the drought started they had to start using their life savings to buy feed for the sheep on the farm.
The sheep flock has been reduced too less than 50% of the number they used to be over the last 5 years due to sheep succumbing too starvation and need to sell of sheep to make ends meet.
The sheep are also not reproducing very well thus there is very little sheep to send to the market and my parents have almost no income to pay bills and buy more feed to support the sheep. Currently they can only keep this up for another 2-3 months before total collapse of the farm.
We have looked at many options:
Plant more feed - for this more capital is need as bore holes need to be dug and irrigation systems installed. My parent have already used up their savings and can't afford this. Also labor is required and my father being in his 60's can no longer do this on his own.
Government drought aid - The SA government has provide very little aid to the drought stricken province to date and the little they do provide is not nearly enough.
Sell the farm - Due to the drought no-one wants to buy it as they can not use it for farming.
Extra work - My parents have tried, but no company wants to hire due to their age.
It broke my heart when I realized my father had started fixing old farm equipment and selling for income. My mother had started baking cookies and cakes to sell in town. She does this all day and only makes $30 a day from this.
I can't image the feeling of working your entire life and raising your kids to just lose it all at the end.
I am trying to support them with the little money I have left over after each month, but it does not even cover 10% of the farms expenses.
The money raised from this campaign will be used to buy more feed for short term support of the sheep and then dig boreholes to provide feed over the next couple of months. Also paying of loans already taken out to support the farm.
After this we will trust in God to provide the rain as he always does after the drought.
If you have taken the time to read this, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Even if you are unable to donate please take 5 mins to say a prayer for rain for the farm and all the farms effected by drought.
God Bless
